Perimenopause Fatigue: Why Sleep Doesn't Always Fix It
If you've gone to bed at a reasonable hour, technically slept, and still woken up feeling like you never rested, you already know the particular exhaustion of this stage. Fatigue is the easy symptom to underestimate, because hot flashes get all the press. Yet in a large international survey led by Mayo Clinic researchers and published in the journal Menopause, women reported fatigue and mental and physical exhaustion among their most common experiences of the transition, even though hot flashes are the symptom most people recognize. - Hormonal swings affecting mood. Fluctuating estrogen can nudge the brain chemistry involved in mood and drive, and low mood is exhausting in its own right.
- The ordinary load of midlife. Your 40s are often the decade when careers, kids or teenagers, and aging parents all demand the most at once, and chronic stress and poor sleep feed each other.

But plenty of women notice little change, and some report more desire in this stage, often as worries about pregnancy or parenting recede. Hormones shape the terrain; they don't decide the outcome.
